Marsella, 1940. Dos estadounidenses y sus aliados organizan una operación para rescatar a los artistas, escritores y refugiados que huyen de Europa durante la guerra.

La primera misión tripulada a Marte se acerca ahora al planeta rojo. La tripulación incluye científicos de primer nivel y una joven psiquiatra, responsable de su salud mental. Pero justo cuando están a punto de aterrizar, algo sale mal.
